• The Direct Technique:

When we use this method, we teach entirely in the target language. For example, if you are learning Japanese, you will be spoken to in Japanese and you instructor will encourage you to speak in Japanese too. Initially, you may find it difficult, but as you become more proficient, you will become confident.

• Using the Grammar – Translation Technique:

In this method, we teach by translating to and from the language being learnt. Rules of grammar are taught and lots of words are given for memorising. However, when using this technique, oral ability to speak the foreign language will be minimal, but you will be an expert translator in due course.

• Audio – lingual Method:

This technique uses a process to teach a language whereby the student learns by acquiring habits in the target language. Everyday situations are taught in the foreign language and constantly reinforced by using audio tapes. The audio will drill in the new language extensively, before the student is introduced to the written script.

• Structural Approach:

This approach emphasises learning of the grammatical rules in a set order, one at a time. As an example the English equivalent of the verb “To be” is introduced and the student is taught how to use it, before using in the present continuous tense, as an auxiliary.

• The Suggestopedia Technique:

To become proficient in a foreign language, the mental block of thinking it is too hard, has to be first removed. Once this suggestion that learning the foreign language is easy, is repeatedly drilled into the student by many techniques, the student becomes receptive to learning the foreign language.
